Lately, I have been re-watching few episodes of DBZ, especially the cell and buu saga. One thing I noticed about the protagonist Goku is how he leads the Z-fighters. Along with his innocent, charming character there lies a strong leadership quality. The following two instances shows how takes chances and builds good a team.

1. Perfect Cell vs Gohan:

During the final moments of cell saga, Goku let his 11 year old son to fight against the "Perfect Cell", btw who is super strong. I am not sure if Goku could have handled Perfect cell by himself and I am not saying he couldn't have. But the point I am trying to make is that, he understands the hidden potential of his son "Gohan". Goku knows Gohan has to break his boundaries of his strength, the only way to do this is to push him to his limits. Well the tournament between Cell and Gohan is a perfect opportunity to do this. Goku saw the threat as an opportunity for Gohan. That's why he insisted on letting Gohan to fight even though this idea has been opposed heavily by Piccollo, the person who personally trained Gohan. The fight will be a death match and if Goku has miscalculated his decison his son could die. But Goku knows the limitations and potentials of his son/fellow teammate. "That's a skill every leader should possess!!"

2. Fat Majin buu vs Super Saiyan 3 Goku:

Fast forward to buu saga, when goku encountered buu he not only flexed with Super Saiyan 3 form but also overpowered buu. Buu was literally terrified of this form. Even though this SSJ3 form is short lived, that might be enough for Goku to finish buu. But he didn't, rather he choose to let the next generation or others to handle buu. Goku may not be always there for Earth to defend it against all evil. Moreover Goku is already dead and is in Earth for short period of time thus he wants his successors to take risks and learn. (That's also why he let Gohan to fight cell). Its about passing on the baton to next generation. More specifically Goten and young Trunks. They need an opportunity to test their fusion technique. Even if Gotenks (Fused version of Goten and Trunks) may not be able to defeat buu, there is Gohan and vegta. Its the risk Goku took for the sustainability of defense of Earth. A leader shouldn't always carry his fellow teammates, they should be made to take chances and experiment with their capabilities (ex: fusion technique). Even if they fall, they will learn how not to fall next time.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Understand the limits and capabilities of your team.
  2. Provide platform and opportunities for your team to realize this.
  3. Don't run one man show, let them take chances.
  4. And be charming 😉.
